Rice Athletics and the Office of Academic Advising jointly hosted the 39th annual Scholar-Athlete Celebration Feb. 23 at the R Room at Rice Stadium. The award winners were chosen based on character and accomplishment in school and in sport.

The recognized athletes were joined by their favorite professors as they shared their gratitude toward the coaches, peers and faculty members who supported their dual commitments.

“Today marks a momentous occasion,” said Tommy McClelland, vice president and director of athletics. “This evening embodies the essence of our institution, showcasing a vibrant community of talent, ambition and commitment. Our exceptional scholar-athletes, hailing from 20 different programs of studies across all disciplines, exemplify the diverse tapestry of interest and talent that enriches our department and serves as a cornerstone of pride for Rice University.”

President Reginald DesRoches, Provost Amy Dittmar, Dean of Undergraduates Bridget Gorman along with several members of the Rice Board of Trustees, the R Association board and several donors attended this year’s event. The musical talent was provided by Filippo Aldrovandi Reina, a junior on the men’s cross-country and track and field teams who is majoring in violin performance.

Sponsored by the R Association, Rice Scholar-Athletes are selected from a pool of Honor Athletes (third-, fourth- and fifth-year student-athletes who maintain a 3.4 GPA) during the spring semester of every academic year. Each varsity team may honor up to three roster members with the title of Scholar-Athlete, and awardees are determined by the Office of Academic Advising for Athletics in conjunction with the athletics department coaching staff.
