Domestic violence affects many with 1 in 5 college students and 1 in 4 women experiencing abuse in their lifetime. Since 1977, the Houston Area Women’s Center, a community partner of Rice University, has been a vital resource for those affected by domestic and sexual violence. Domestic violence affects people of all genders, including men and those in the LGBTQ+ community, and HAWC provides support to all survivors impacted by abuse.
Sonia Corrales, deputy CEO of HAWC, recently spoke with Rice News to shed light on what domestic violence is, the different forms of abuse, warning signs and the misconceptions surrounding this issue.
“No one deserves to be abused. You are never alone in this,” Corrales said, offering hope and support to those affected.
