Q: How long have you worked at Rice?

A: Going on 16 years.

Q: What is your favorite part about working for the university?

A: Our community and the spontaneous, organic dialogues that happen while traversing the campus spark collaboration and innovation.

Q: What do you want people to know about living in Houston?

A: Houston’s expansive culinary scene is notable and deserving of attention. With the nation’s largest and most diverse community, there’s an abundance of opportunities to immerse yourself in various cultures and indulge in an array of culinary experiences.

Q: What do you do in your down time?

A: I enjoy exploring new, unique places, especially in nature, arts and new culinary delights. Traveling truly inspires me, and I thoroughly enjoy immersing myself in different cultures. I also love to hike, cycle, read, meditate and do yoga.

Q: What’s your favorite spot-on campus to show someone?

A: Being a history enthusiast, one of my favorite highlights is the Baker College commons, which holds the distinction of being the first food hall on campus. Additionally, the Baker College library is a true treasure worth exploring.

Q: What’s the most exciting time of year for you as it relates to Rice?

A: The campus buzzes with vibrant energy when the freshmen move in during O-week, and it is a joyous spectacle to observe. Our culture is incredibly welcoming, and this time perfectly encapsulates that spirit!

Q: What’s the one thing that makes Rice special to you?

A: The tight-knit community and a focus on excellence towards making a broader impact. Through collaboration, innovation and support, we can help our students achieve their goals.

Q: If you could be Sammy the Owl for a day, what would you do?

A: I’d start my day at CHAUS, joining students for a caffeine boost and hanging out in the student center for a bit. Then I’d swing by Patterson Sports Center and Tudor Fieldhouse to high-five some teams while they practice. I would go check on the folks in the Moody Arts Center. Next, I’d head to the library to read some books and hang out with the students. For lunch, I’d visit all the college serveries and spread joy in the kitchens with our hardworking dining teams as well as visit some of the retail locations. After grabbing some cookies, I’d head to the Allen Center, Sewall Hall and Cambridge buildings to give the teams there a sweet boost. Throughout the day, I’d attend various events across campus based on the schedule. The best way to wrap up the day would be spending time with graduate students at Valhalla. And if there were any evening games, Sammy wouldn’t miss out on that for anything!

Q: How would you describe your experience as a Rice employee?

A: I have a sense of pride and fulfillment being a Rice employee. I used to say that you feel valued as someone for their contributions and “not just a number producing a number.” I appreciate the opportunities for growth, meaningful work and the impact I can make within the university community. Overall, it is both professionally enriching and personally fulfilling.

Q: Where do you see Rice in 25 years?

A: I see Rice expanding its global influence and at the forefront in tackling society’s critical issues. The university will be a pioneer with innovative approaches, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and leaving a positive legacy for future generations, who will continue to shape a better world.

Q: Describe Rice University in four words or less.

A: Community, collaboration, innovation and excellence.

Q: What else have we not talked about yet that merits discussion?

A: I am deeply passionate about hospitality and value being part of a department that embodies it at the university. Hospitality to me means creating a welcoming and caring environment where everyone feels respected and valued. It’s not just about providing a service; it’s about going above and beyond to ensure others’ well-being and satisfaction while fostering meaningful connections. Ultimately, hospitality is about making someone’s day a little brighter and leaving a positive impression that lasts long after the interaction. I hope everyone gets that feeling from their interactions with our housing and dining team!
