Q: What is your favorite part about working for the university?
A: The Rice community, including everyone from our students to staff and faculty. Throughout my Rice career, I have dedicated myself to supporting the undergraduate student population and fostering their development during their college journey. In my role as the director of student services and initiatives, I have the privilege of leading a talented team that shares a commitment to assisting students as they navigate their college experience, achieve their goals and work toward successful graduation. This truly makes the experience of coming to work at Rice enjoyable and rewarding.
Q: What do you want people to know about living in Houston?
A: The food! I love how Houston has a diverse palette; anyone visiting can dive into the vibrant mix of cultures around them. From savoring delicious food to immersing yourself in unique traditions, there’s so much to explore. And don’t forget about the sports — attending a Houston sporting event is always a blast.
Q: What do you do in your downtime?
A: I’m so excited to share that I’m a new pet owner! My amazing dog, Levi, is a rescue German Shepherd who just turned 1. He’s full of energy and absolutely loves spending our downtime at the dog park. It’s such an adventure watching him explore and play with all the other pups.
Q: What’s your favorite spot on campus to show someone?
A: For me, James Turrell’s “Twilight Epiphany” Skyspace has always held a captivating allure with its open expanse and the way it connects the outdoors with a sense of tranquility. However, with the recent redesign of the Academic Quad, I find myself drawn to this vibrant space as a close contender for my second favorite spot. The combination of lush greenery, carefully placed seating and the lively atmosphere created by students and faculty gathering there adds a new dimension to my appreciation of the campus.
Q: What’s the most exciting time of year for you as it relates to Rice?
A: O-Week, but I am biased; I have found leading O-Week is one of the most rewarding programs designed to welcome new students and their families to Rice. Having been involved in organizing it for several years, I have witnessed firsthand the dedication and care our student leaders exhibit in helping newcomers transition smoothly into university life. This initiative showcases the commitment of the Rice community to support and guide new students as they begin their academic journey.
Q: What’s the one thing that makes Rice special to you?
A: I have to reflect on my response regarding my favorite part of Rice; the way everyone comes together for the university and its students, staff and faculty is what makes this place special.
Q: If you could be Sammy The Owl for a day, what would you do?
A: I think it would be fun to spend a day sitting in class as Sammy.
Q: How would you describe your experience as a Rice employee?
A: I have truly thrived as a professional during my time at Rice, and I am deeply appreciative of the numerous opportunities that both the institution and my leaders have provided me. Their unwavering support and guidance have played a crucial role in my development, allowing me to evolve into the person and professional I am today. Each experience has contributed significantly to my growth, and for that, I am profoundly grateful.
Q: Where do you see Rice in 25 years?
A: I am truly excited to witness Rice’s growth as an institution, especially with the recent unveiling of our strategic plan, Momentous. I believe we are on the path to achieving new heights in education and research, and I feel honored to contribute to this positive impact as part of the team.
