Q: How long have you worked at Rice?

A: Eight years

Q: What is your favorite part about working for the university?

A: I’m genuinely grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such a diverse and dedicated group of talented individuals from various campus departments. It’s incredibly fulfilling to address our most pressing construction and space challenges in support of Rice’s strategic priorities. Collaborating with so many wonderful people to turn the Ralph S. O’Connor Building for Engineering and Science from a dream into a reality has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.

Q: What do you want people to know about living in Houston?

A: As an immigrant, I’ve discovered that Houston is one of the most diverse and welcoming places to raise a family. Plus, the food scene here is incredible!

Q: What do you do in your downtime?

A: I love exploring Houston like a tourist and discovering fun and interesting activities to do with my family. In the past month, we visited a local warehouse where we had a great time relieving stress by smashing glass. We also checked out the rooftop at The Post to take in the stunning Houston skyline.

Q: What’s your favorite spot on campus to show someone?

A: My favorite place is the top floor of the new Ralph S. O’Connor Building for Engineering and Science. From there, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the campus while savoring a delicious latte from the café on the first floor.

Q: What’s the most exciting time of year for you as it relates to Rice?

A: I really enjoy mid-August when the entire school is focused on preparing for the new academic year — getting the buildings, grounds and classes ready to welcome both new and returning students. The energy is infectious. I also love the end of the semester, especially around thesis presentation time when the area around Valhalla buzzes with a sense of accomplishment as our graduate students celebrate the culmination of their hard work in research.

Q: What’s the one thing that makes Rice special to you?

A: What makes Rice truly special to me is its strong sense of community and commitment to nurturing a culture of care. I feel fortunate to collaborate with individuals who genuinely value their contributions. I also appreciate the focus on maintaining a healthy work-life balance and the chance to engage with the Houston community through Rice’s various programming initiatives.

Q: If you could be Sammy The Owl for a day, what would you do?

A: I would probably wander around campus late at night, since owls are nocturnal, to surprise our undergraduate and graduate students who are often burning the midnight oil in the lab or library. I’d bring treats to lift their spirits during those long hours!

Q: How would you describe your experience as a Rice employee?

A: My experience at Rice has been full of exciting challenges that have fostered rewarding personal growth and learning.

Q: Where do you see Rice in 25 years?

A: In 25 years, I envision Rice University continuing on its path as a leader in interdisciplinary research and education — a vibrant hub where the community flourishes. It will attract the most talented workforce and make a significant impact not only on the city, state and country but also on a global scale.

Q: Describe Rice in four words or less.

A: Inspiring, diverse, rigorous and vibrant.
