Six-time Grammy Award-winning music director Giancarlo Guerrero led Rice University’s Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra through musical landscapes from outer space to a 1940s jazz club in “One Thousand and One Nights” April 19.
The Shepherd School’s final concert of the 2023-24 season also featured clarinetist Najee Greenlee, a sophomore studying under Richie Hawley and winner of the 2023 Shepherd School of Music Concerto Competition. Accompanied by the orchestra, he performed Aaron Copland’s “Clarinet Concerto” before the concert concluded with Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade.” The concert opened with Shepherd School alumna Caroline Shaw’s “The Observatory.”
Further enriching the experience, audience members had the chance to engage in a post-concert chat with Guerrero, Greenlee and Shepherd School Dean Matthew Loden.
