Lung cancer is the second-most common cancer among Texans, and more than 16,000 Texans are expected to be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2024, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. Further, the American Lung Association ranks Texas in the bottom tier of states for lung cancer screening adherence.
That is why the Rice University American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative (Rice ALCSI), the local branch of the national student-led nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness of and access to lung cancer screening, aims to bring attention to this deadly disease during National Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November.
“Lung cancer screening is quick, painless and potentially lifesaving,” said senior Priyanka Senthil, founder of Rice ALCSI. “It offers a chance to detect lung cancer early when treatment is more effective. At the American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative, we’re empowering students to take an active role in spreading awareness by educating their families, friends and communities about lung cancer screening. A simple exam could make all the difference.”
To spread the word and encourage screening, the organization is hosting events throughout the month:
- Nov. 16: “Breathe Deep Together Lung Cancer Awareness Walk” at Rice Stadium, 11-1 p.m.
Co-hosted by the LUNGevity Foundation and Rice ALCSI, the walk will bring the community together to honor anyone affected by lung cancer. It is open to all students and staff at Rice as well as doctors, lung cancer patients and local community members. To participate in the “Breathe Deep Together Walk,” visit here. - Nov. 18: Lung cancer screening presentation, location and time to be determined
A thoracic surgeon, thoracic oncologist and lung cancer screening nurse navigator will visit Rice so that Owls may learn more about lung cancer, the screening process and who might qualify for testing.
The organization will present to the Houston City Council Nov. 19 and also take part in Annual Lung Cancer Screening Day Nov. 9 and the Great American Smokeout Nov. 21, both in collaboration with Houston Methodist in Sugar Land.
