Rice University’s Office of Sustainability recently hosted a festival to celebrate April’s designation as Earth Month in the Rice Memorial Center’s Grand Hall. The gathering highlighted various student organizations, departments and community entities that work to advance sustainability at Rice and within Houston. Twenty-five organizations joined, and more than 150 students attended.
Attendees were provided with a “passport” that listed the attending participating groups, who each were provided a table to display their materials and set up activities. Those tabling the event signed the passport under their group name when a student engaged in an activity or learned more information about the group’s mission and work. After gaining enough “stamps,” they became eligible to win sustainable prizes.
Earth Month is an offshoot of Earth Day, which began in the 1970s and is celebrated every April 22.
