Rice research could make weird AI images a thing of the past
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has notoriously struggled to create consistent images, often getting details like fingers and facial symmetry wrong. Moreover, these models can completely fail when prompted to generate images at different image sizes and resolutions. Rice computer scientists’ new method of generating images with pre-trained diffusion models ⎯ a class of generative AI models that "learn" by adding layer after layer of random noise to the images they are trained on and then generate new images by removing the added noise ⎯ could help correct such issues.

When Rice University junior Kayleigh Kim performs William Walton’s Violin Concerto with the Shepherd School of Music Symphony Orchestra, she’ll do so on a 335-year-old Stradivarius that is on loan to the school from a generous collector. “It's such a beautiful instrument,” said Kim, who studies with professor of violin Paul Kantor. “I found immediately it has such a warm glow to its sound. Everything is very vocal.”
