Owls compete in NCAA Indoor Championships

Gunnarsdottir earns first-team All-American honors

Alexander Slinkman tied a personal best in pole vault with a 5.51m (18'1") placing him tenth out of 16 competitors during the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Three Owls represented the Rice men's and women's track and field teams at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico, last weekend.

For the women's team, Erna Gunnarsdottir placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 17.59 meters (57 feet, 8.5 inches). The mark earned her first-team All-American status, which was her second All-American honor in indoor competition (second team in 2021 after placing 11th) and third overall. 

Tara Simpson-Sullivan finished 14th in the weight throw with a distance of 20.47 meters (67'2"), earning second-team All-American honors. This is her fourth All-American honor and second in indoors (second team 2022 after finishing 14th).

For the men, Alexander Slinkman tied a personal best in pole vault at 5.51 meters (18'1"), placing him 10th. The mark also earns him second-team All-American honors.
