Owls basketball teams receive invitations to postseason tournaments

A Rice basketball player is defended by two UTSA players during their March 8 game at the Conference USA men's tournament in Frisco, Texas.

The Rice men's basketball team has received a bid to the College Basketball Invitational, while the women will participate in the Women's National Invitation Tournament.

The men (18-15), seeded 12th in the 16-team CBI, will face fifth-seeded Duquesne University (20-12) at noon March 19. The entire tournament, which features Rice for the third time, is being held at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The women (22-8) will face Brigham Young University (16-16) in the first round of the WNIT at 8 p.m. March 17 in Provo, Utah. The Owls won the tournament in their last appearance in 2021.

The Owl men and women were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championships March 9 in Frisco, Texas.

The men, the No. 6 seed, lost to the third-seeded University of Alabama at Birmingham 87-60. Travis Evee led the Owls (18-15) with 20 points.

The women, seeded third, fell to the No. 6 seed University of Texas at San Antonio 62-54. India Bellamy paced the Owls (22-8) with 14 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.

The men advanced to the quarterfinals with a 72-71 victory over UTSA March 8, while the women had a bye in the first round.
