Campus parking citation recipients get second chance for relief

Campus parking tickets are a bit easier to manage... at least this week.

For just a couple of days, there will be an easy way for anyone with unpaid parking citations issued before Nov. 1 to pay them off while simultaneously benefitting the Rice community.

Student Success Initiatives (SSI), the Rice University Police Department (RUPD) and the Rice Parking Office invite the campus community to pay off unpaid campus parking fines with donations of food and hygiene product donations. All donations will go to The Pantry.

“This is a one-time opportunity for people who have outstanding tickets to take care of them by donating foods and nonperishable items. At the same time, this helps those in need,” said Clemente Rodriguez, chief of RUPD. “Anyone can come in, make a make a donation, help out others in our community and at the same time help themselves resolve their parking tickets. It's definitely a good way to clear your conscience because you won't have those tickets hanging over you anymore.”

Donations will be collected from Nov. 15 to 17 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., in Provisional Campus Facility 1, located at College Way and Alumni Drive. Parking on College Way will be limited to 15 minutes with flashers on. Anyone who wants to pay off citations with donations should bring a photo ID and license plate number to access the account quickly. Food items will not be accepted if they are damaged, opened, missing a label, or expired.

The Pantry, housed in SSI – Student Center, provides access to nonperishable foods and hygiene products. It’s similar to a neighborhood food market, except its food and products are free to its shoppers. The Pantry operates on a good-faith basis as an anonymous resource for all students, faculty, staff and community members.

Drivers with outstanding tickets can bring a minimum of five nonperishable food items or regular-size hygiene products to settle one current unpaid citation up to $30. Anyone has more than one outstanding citation issued before November 1 can donate more. Ten products will cover a $60-$75 citation and 20 products will cover a $150 citation.

Donations will not be valid on citations already paid.

Of course, anyone who doesn’t have outstanding tickets is also welcome to donate.
