The Rice women's soccer team continues to make history.
Three days after notching the program's first-ever victory in the NCAA Tournament, the Owls danced into the Sweet 16 with a 1-0 upset victory over West Virginia University May 1 in Cary, North Carolina. Delaney Schultz converted a second-half penalty kick for the winning goal against the Mountaineers, who were the No. 5 seed in the tournament.
Owls goalkeeper Bella Killgore made six saves while recording her 11th shutout of the season on a day in which her team was outshot 20-1 by the Mountaineers (10-3-1).
Rice (14-2-1), which defeated Furman University 2-1 in the first round, will face the University of Virginia (12-4-2) May 5 in Cary. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
Rice's 14 victories tie the school record established in 2004 and matched in 2014. The Owls are unbeaten in their last 11 matches (10-0-1).
