Rice University’s Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies is offering part-time, live online coding classes for high school students this summer.
The Rice University High School Coding Camp is designed to formally introduce students to the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to begin exploring the field of computer programming. The course combines structured lessons, paired practice and flexible group work. Class sessions are led by veteran industry practitioners and mentors who can answer questions and provide insight based on real-world developer experience.
The two three-week sessions available this summer — June 14-July 2 and July 19-Aug. 6 — will feature live, virtual classes Monday through Friday. Students will learn in-demand, browser-based technologies including HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and jQuery, and they will create sample portfolios and earn a certificate of completion to showcase their accomplishments on college applications.
“The coding camp offers high school students the opportunity to learn a skill set that will have practical application in virtually every possible career field that may interest them,” said Jennifer Gigliotti, senior associate dean at the Glasscock School. “The combination of academic enrichment, career exploration, peer engagement and college preparation really makes this an ideal summer experience for high school students.”
The Glasscock School will offer a limited number of need-based scholarships for the program. Priority will be given to students who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals at their secondary schools.
The coding camp is an open enrollment program. The only requirements are that students be between 13 and 18 years old, attend high school and live in the United States. Students who are interested can register at https://techbootcamps.rice.edu/hs.
