Ruth Maxwell, a longtime Rice University Police Department officer who retired last year, died June 22. She was 59.
Maxwell, who served the Rice community for 17 years, died in an automobile accident in New Mexico. Her son Dennis is hospitalized with injuries he suffered in the same accident.
Ruth had already served in both the Houston Police Department and the Alvin Police Department when she donned the uniform and badge of the RUPD in 2003. She quickly became a beloved member of the Rice community; as an associate of Lovett College she used her talents as an avid baker to make treats for students, staff and faculty.
Ruth is survived by her husband Griff, a retired Houston police officer; her children Dennis and Ashley; and two grandchildren.
