Andrés Vela, a graduate student in double bass performance, is the Shepherd School of Music’s recipient of the Presser Graduate Music Award. The award provides a $10,000 stipend for opportunities not normally available in a university setting, including summer study abroad with a noted teacher, travel to audition for professional opportunities or enrollment in prestigious music festivals. Nominees must be a returning graduate student who has demonstrated superb musical talent with emphasis in performance, composition, musicology and/or music education. Vela will use the award to commission, perform and record eight new works to be composed by people of color.
