Flu shots offered to Rice community on campus

flu shot being administered

Flu shots are now available on campus for members of the Rice community.

Rice Student Health Services (SHS) and Human Resources have partnered with Walgreen’s to make the shots available to students, faculty and staff on the first floor of the Cambridge Office Building (COB) on a walk-in basis. Rice ID cards are required to confirm eligibility of employees, while students must bring their health insurance cards for an appropriate claim to be processed and a credit card in case their insurance is not accepted (the shots are fully covered under Affordable Care Act-compatible plans).

The schedule is as follows:

  • Aug. 31, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Sept. 1, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Sept. 2, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Sept. 7, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Sept. 8, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Sept. 9, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • Sept. 14, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

The flu shot is required for all graduate and undergraduate students, who must submit proof of vaccination through this form no later than Oct. 30. If a student wishes to opt out for a religious or medical reason, that should be noted on the form and the SHS medical team will follow up.

In addition to the COB option, students can get the vaccine through their doctor or pharmacy using their insurance or by making an appointment with SHS (713-348-4966) for its clinics that will be available in mid-September, where shots will cost $18 but students will receive a coded receipt they can submit to their insurance companies for reimbursement (Aetna student health plans will cover the full cost).

Employees are strongly encouraged to get a flu shot and may do so through their provider or pharmacy using their insurance in addition to the COB clinics, where there will be special shots available for those over 65.
