HOUSTON – (Oct. 29, 2020) – Experts from Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy will examine the role of "soft power" in U.S.-China diplomacy in the final webinar of its 2020 Election Series Nov. 2.

Two panelists from the Baker Institute's China Studies ProgramSteven Lewis, the C.V. Starr Transnational China Fellow, and Aynne Kokas, a nonresident scholar — will discuss the shift in China's cultural influence strategy and how it impacts the nation's status as a world power. In recent years, China has found the American entertainment industry, professional sports associations and foreign media companies to be enthusiastic potential partners.

“The stereotypical Chinese foreign affairs official — faceless, formal and utterly predictable — is being replaced by the ‘wolf-warrior diplomat’ — colorful, idiosyncratic and aggressively controversial,” according to the Baker Institute.
