Richard Baraniuk, the Victor E. Cameron Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a professor of computer science, is co-author of the introduction to “The Science of Deep Learning,” a special issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The issue incorporates papers and presentations by computer scientists at a Sackler Colloquium in March 2019. Baraniuk’s co-author is Matan Gavish of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The Journal of Physical Chemistry B has published a virtual festschrift in honor of Peter Rossky, Rice’s Harry C. and Olga K. Professor of Chemistry, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and until recently dean of the Wiess School of Natural Sciences. The issue includes a tribute to Rossky and his contributions to the field of physical chemistry, and an autobiographical history by the professor.

Antonios Mikos, Rice’s Louis Calder Professor of Bioengineering and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and frequent collaborator Shengmin Zhang, chair and professor of biomedical engineering at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China, authored an open-access introduction to a special issue of Advanced Healthcare Materials on biomaterials for regenerative medicine. The issue highlights strategies to promote the regeneration of functional bone, cartilage, muscle and skin and provides an overview of current research.

Amanda Perkins-Ball, an assistant teaching professor and sports medicine adviser in kinesiology, has been named diversity committee chair of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). The committee ensures AASP honors its commitment to equal treatment of race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, nationality, physical capacities and sexual orientation. Perkins-Ball joined Rice in 2017 and primarily researches health disparities through the promotion of physical activity behavior among underserved populations.
