HOUSTON – (Sept. 14, 2020) – A world renowned expert on international trade deals has written a new book on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the landmark accord destined to impact trillions of dollars in commerce across the North American continent.
"An Introduction to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement: Understanding the New NAFTA” provides detailed analysis and critique of the USMCA and examines how it relates to the old trade deal it succeeded. David Gantz, the Will Clayton Fellow in Trade and International Economics at the Baker Institute’s Center for the United States and Mexico, wrote it as a guide for anyone who wants to better understand one of the world’s most economically and politically significant regional trade agreements.
The USMCA, which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), took two years of negotiations by what Gantz describes as “unpredictable” leadership. The trade deal that took effect on July 1 will govern the economic relationship between the three countries for the foreseeable future — including the more than $1.3 trillion in regional trade in goods and services every year.
Gantz’s decades of experience provides "an invaluable guide for trade law specialists and nonspecialists alike," according to Lorand Bartels, who teaches law at Cambridge University.
“The world’s leading expert on free trade agreements, Professor David Gantz, has produced yet another world-class book on this subject," said Raj Bhala, a professor at the University of Kansas School of Law.
