A new volume of "The Future of U.S.-Mexico Relations: Strategic Foresight," a collection of essays that examine the relationship between the countries, offers policy recommendations for key issues and makes predictions on what may happen in the future.
Tony Payan, the Françoise and Edward Djerejian Fellow for Mexico Studies and director of the Center for the United States and Mexico at Rice's Baker Institute for Public Policy, served as editor of the book and co-authored one of its essays.
The book is the culmination of a major research effort by the Center for the United States and Mexico. Essays by scholars from both countries focus on topics such as trade, immigration, the environment, drugs, health and security.
“Employing a strategic foresight methodology, the authors use past trends and identify pivotal drivers to predict at least three possible outcomes for the next few decades: a baseline or continuity scenario and an optimistic and a pessimistic one,” according to publisher Arte Público Press.
Project partners include the Center for U.S. and Mexican Law at the University of Houston Law Center, the Mission Foods Texas-Mexico Center at Southern Methodist University, the School of Government and Public Transformation at Tecnológico de Monterrey, the International Studies Department at Universidad Iberoamericana, and the School of Law and Criminology at Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León.
